Payment method types
Label offline payments (Check, Zelle, and more) for point of sale, subscriptions, and invoices.
Payment method types let your studio record how an offline payment was received — not just that it was cash. Use them when clients pay by check, bank transfer, Zelle, or any other method you track outside of card.
This feature is available on Studio plans. Enable it under Settings → Business → Custom payment method types, then define your types on this page.
What you can use it for
| Use case | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Point of sale | When staff sell a membership or pack and take payment offline, they pick the real method (Check, Zelle, etc.) instead of only "Cash." |
| Cash subscriptions | Offline membership sign-ups at the front desk stay labeled correctly on the client's purchase and in reporting. |
| Invoices | When you Mark as paid on an invoice paid outside Stripe, you can match the method the client actually used. |
| Reporting & support | Staff and admins see the method on purchases and payments, which makes reconciliation and client questions easier. |
Cash-only checkout still works without custom types. Custom types are optional labels on top of offline payment flows.
Enable the feature
- Go to Settings → Business
- Under Subscription & Payment Settings, turn on Custom payment method types
- Click Save
- Go to Settings → Payment method types (under Business in Settings)
- Click New payment method type and enter a name (for example
CheckorZelle)
Names are fixed when created. To change a label, archive the old type and create a new one.
Manage types
On Settings → Payment method types you can:
- View Active types available at POS and when marking invoices paid
- Archive a type you no longer offer (past payments keep the old label)
- Open the Archived tab and restore a type if needed
Built-in Cash is always available at checkout when you pay offline; custom types appear alongside it once you have at least one active type.
At the point of sale
When a cart includes a subscription and staff choose Cash as payment, a Payment method type dropdown appears if you have custom types configured. Staff can leave it as Cash or pick a custom type.
Custom types do not replace card or wallet payments — they apply to offline / cash-style checkout only.
See Point of sale and Cash payments.
On invoices
For invoices paid outside the card network:
- Open the invoice
- Click Mark as paid
- Choose Cash or one of your custom payment method types
See Invoices.
