Charge subscriptions on the terminal
Why the card reader isn't an option for memberships, and how to sell one in person instead.
You can't sell a recurring membership on the card reader. As soon as a membership is in the cart, Use payment terminal stops appearing in the point of sale, and checkout refuses a reader payment if one is attempted.
A membership needs a card stored on the client's profile to bill each renewal, and a card tapped at the reader isn't kept on file. That's why the option is hidden rather than offered and then failed at renewal.
This applies wherever your studio is located.
Sell a membership in person
Use either of these instead of the reader:
- Send a payment link so the client enters their card on their own device. They can pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay there, and the card is saved for renewals. See payment links.
- Add the client's card during checkout so it's on file for future billing. See manage payment methods.
Once a card is on file through either method, the membership renews automatically on its billing cycle — no reader needed.
For a refresher on how recurring billing works, see memberships.
What the reader is for
The card reader handles one-time, in-person payments — drop-ins, class packages, retail, and any other single charge. Those all work normally, including a client tapping Apple Pay or Google Pay at the reader. See WisePOS E terminal.
